TaxJar calculates US sales tax in real time. Once the TaxJar app is installed, SubscriptionFlow asks TaxJar for the tax on every invoice, renewal and hosted checkout page, based on your ship-from address and the customer's address, and can record paid invoices and refunds in TaxJar so your reports are ready for filing.
This guide covers installing and configuring the app. To create a TaxJar tax, assign it to plan prices and see it on invoices and checkout, continue with TaxJar: Complete Guide.
Before You Start
- A TaxJar account with access to the SmartCalcs API, and its API token (TaxJar › Account › SmartCalcs API). To test first, use a TaxJar sandbox token.
- Your ship-from address: the address you sell from.
- Your user needs permission to manage external tax engines. Otherwise the page shows "You do not have permission to manage external tax engines."
Step 1: Open the TaxJar App
- Click the gear icon to open Settings. Under API & Integrations, click Apps.
- Open the Tax-Management category and click TaxJar.
Step 2: Connect TaxJar
-
On the Connection tab, the status reads Not installed until you save a valid token and address.
- Paste your token into API Token. If it is a sandbox token, turn on Sandbox (use a TaxJar sandbox token); the switch must match the token.
- Click Test Connection to check the token.
- Under Ship-from (origin) address, enter the Street, City, State / Province code (for example
CA), Postal code and Country (2-letter ISO code) (for exampleUS). State, postal code and country are required.
Then click Save & Install at the bottom. The status changes to installed: "the TaxJar engine is available under Administration → Taxes."
Step 3: Choose the TaxJar Settings
-
Open the Settings tab:
- Calculate tax using: the address TaxJar uses: Customer's shipping address (billing as fallback), Customer's billing address (shipping as fallback), or Ship-from (origin) address only. If a customer's address is incomplete, the ship-from address is used.
- Transaction recording: Record paid invoices and refunds in TaxJar, or Calculate only (do not record transactions).
- Log TaxJar requests: keep it on to make troubleshooting easier.
Click Save & Install (or Save once installed).
Step 4: Create a TaxJar Tax
- Go to Settings › Taxes, click New Tax and set Tax Engine to TaxJar Tax Engine. There's no rate to enter: TaxJar supplies it for each sale. Then assign the tax to your plan prices. TaxJar taxes can also be combined in a tax group (with other TaxJar taxes only, not with SubscriptionFlow taxes). Full steps: TaxJar: Complete Guide.
Logs and Uninstall
- Once installed, the TaxJar page has a Logs tab listing every connection test, tax calculation and recorded transaction with its Time, Action, Status and Detail.
- To disconnect TaxJar, click Uninstall on the Connection tab. This also removes the integration's log history.
